Why you should replace your air filter this winter

We encourage preventative maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment all the time, but this doesn’t only mean ongoing tune-ups – it also involves looking at your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system operating smoothly and enhance your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the ideal time to check your filter, as the cold season comes to a close and summer is nearing. There are several benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Extending the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to trigger a system interruption is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that is built up on your filter can influence your whole system to work harder than it should to keep your home cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and cause your system to overheat.

Increasing indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it enters your house. After the filter has been in for a while, the less effective it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your house, which is even more critical if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps coming up, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you would prefer they aren’t circulating in your house. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy throughout allergy season.

Examine your system or current air filter provider for suggestions on how often you should be putting in a replacement filter. For most filters through Heartland Heating & Cooling, we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the right time to exchange your air filter?
