Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage preventative maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment all the time, but this doesn’t only mean ongoing tune-ups – it also involves checking your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system operating smoothly and enhance your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the ideal time to check your filter, as the cold season comes to an end and the warmer weather is nearing. There are many benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Extending the life and efficiency of your system
A surefire way to trigger a system interruption is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that gathers on your filter can influence your whole system to work harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and result in your system overheating.

Increasing indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it enters your home. After the filter has been in for a while, the less effective it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your house, which is even more critical if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you don’t want them moving in your house. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy throughout allergy season.

Examine your system or ask your HVAC technician for suggestions on how often you should be changing your filter. For most filters through Heartland Heating & Cooling, we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the right time to exchange your air filter?
